What is unique about The Hermanus Hop?
Although Hermanus is a well known world class tourist destination, the secret spots of the Cape Whale Coast are essentially undiscovered. On our Hermanus Hop, we introduce you to ancient sea caves, pristine beaches where you will most likely not see another soul, the quirky shops in town – off the main road and up a mountain where few go, boasting incredible views and fynbos.
The scenery: A kaleidoscope of beauty. The ocean, the town, the mountains, the wine valley, the food, the views, the people! This is South Africa’s gem. Let us, as long time locals, introduce you to it all.
The terrain: The beach walking is done at low tide when the sand is at its hardest and can be done barefoot or in shoes. The coastal path through town is a gentle meander. The mountain walk takes you to an elevation of just 300 meters, and is along well marked paths.
Sustainability: On this walk we support local communities and businesses, help preserve the heritage of the area, report beach findings to the relevant conservation authorities and help with beach clean-ups.
Hermanus Hop
Day 1: Arrival day: Explore Hermanus and the cliff path. (6 km)
Meet and greet at your accommodation at 14h00. Our team will take you for a wonderful ‘storytelling’ adventure through the history of Hermanus, understanding why Walker Bay is a ‘Hope Spot’ for the future of marine life, as well as explore the unsung heroes off the main tourist route – the hidden gems such as shops, sculptures, landmarks, museums, art galleries, antique collectables, book stores and much more. A short walk up Hoys Koppie gives you an elevated view of Hermanus, and you will learn about why this is such a unique town; such as why the South African Space Agency is based in Hermanus. Our team will drive you to Grotto Beach, and you will walk through an ancient Milkwood Forest and along the famous cliff path while the sun sets over the bay. Walk straight for a magical dinner at one of our favourite restaurants – on us!
Day 2: Visit two sea caves, and then up the wine valley on a safari vehicle. (7 km)
Breakfast at your hotel and our team will then pick you up to visit two historic sea caves and meander along a pristine beach as you look over Walker Bay, back towards Hermanus. Jump onto your safari vehicle for a ‘Hop-on-Hop-off’ wine tasting experience up the Hemel and Aarde wine valley, the birthplace of South Africa’s Pinot Noir. Stop at a wine farm for lunch and head back to Hermanus in the late afternoon. Dinner on own in town.
Day 3: A mountain day. (7km)
Breakfast at your hotel and our team will pick you up at 09h30 and you will head to the hills to explore the beautiful mountains covered with fynbos. Maximum elevation is 300m. The views are vast and incredible. Back to you cars and the end of a wonderful weekend of adventure.
If you would like to add on an additional activity such as sea kayaking or whale watching – this is the best day for us to book it for you.
Please Note: We may change daily activities to adapt to tides or changes in weather
