Slackpacking. Guided. All-Inclusive
Starting just 30 kilometres south of Cape Nature’s famed Whale Trail – an iconic walking trail that we have completed more than 20 times since 2007 – our team has spent over three years meticulously crafting what we believe is the most rewarding all-inclusive Whale Watching experience along the Cape Whale Coast of South Africa.
Each step of the journey has been thoughtfully curated – from to deeply immersive storytelling that brings the local ecology, marine life, history, and culture to life.
Our Walk with Whales is a coastal meander suitable for all people who are walking fit. We offer a complimentary weekly fitness program seven weeks before your start date, to help make this your best walk ever.
We have handpicked, stylish accommodations in prime coastal locations and you choose the accommodation type that suits you. From beautiful shared homes or private en-suite rooms, you’ll enjoy the same extraordinary daily walks and outdoor experiences.
Our professional catering is locally sourced plentiful, nutritious and delicious – and we welcome all dietary requirements.
Our established team will make sure that you have the most incredible, authentic and immersive experience. With our deep logistical expertise and local knowledge, we ensure that every moment of your Walk With Whales is effortless, enriching, and unforgettable.
Pristine, empty beaches. Elevated rock outcrops perfect for whale viewing. Coastal paths leading to places of cultural and historical significance, including the ancient lifestyle of the Strandlopers. Here, southern right whales often pass within 20 metres of shore — sightings are possible every day.
Scenery: Turquoise seas found only in this region, colourful corals scattered along the shoreline, and abundant fynbos in bloom.
Terrain: Low-tide beach walks on firm sand, barefoot or in shoes. Well-marked trails and koppies with moderate climbs, max elevation 210 m.
Sustainability: We support local communities, preserve heritage, report marine findings, and help with beach clean-ups.
Logistics: The walk starts and ends in Hermanus. Simply get to Cape Town — our team can arrange airport transfers, extra accommodation, and activities, with safe parking for self-drivers.
It is much easier if transfers, accommodation and extra activities are booked and arranged by our team. This allows us to manage them for you while you are walking – and you don’t have to worry about a thing.
Solo hikers, small and large groups are all welcome

🌊 A flexible Itinerary for the best possible experience.
Our Walk With Whales itinerary below is a guide, not a fixed schedule.
We may change the days and coastal walks as they are determined by tides and swells. We do our best to keep you on the beaches at low tides when the sand is hard and to get you into the sea caves which are magical. Your safety, experience and comfort are critical to us, and we want to give you the best possible experience.
Our shared transport leaves Hermanus at 12h30 taking you to the start of your hike. You stop on the way for lunch (excluded) in the enchanting town of Napier.
Tonight’s accommodation boasts a scenic view of the turquoise ocean, the harbour, and all the enchantments that Arniston has to offer. You are bound to see whales frolicking in the bay right in front of your accommodation. It’s entirely captivating.
After checkin, we set out on an introductory walk. Depending on the tides, we’ll either:
Sundowners and a welcome from our team, outlining the days ahead and what to expect. The evening ends with a delicious dinner.
Wake to the sound of the ocean and enjoy a hearty breakfast at home or en-route. Todays walk is along one of the most spectacular stretches of South Africa’s southern coastline. This is prime southern right whale territory, and sightings are common — sometimes just metres from shore.
Greet the morning with an awe-inspiring sunrise painting the ocean before your eyes, filling your lungs with the invigorating freshness of the sea breeze. The timing of the day depends on the tides, and so you might have an early start and breakfast en-route, or and early morning dip in the ocean and a relaxing morning and later start. If you did not go into the sea cave on Day 1, you will hopefully get to go today.
You walk through the stunning fynbos, along rocky outcrops and then continue your journey along a pristine, untouched beach, where the presence of whales is a sight to behold. This stretch is a picturesque 9 kilometres, with a picnic lunch en-route. Finally, a leisurely walk leads you to your the transport and you go to your next two nights accommodation for a relaxing evening and a delicious dinner.
An early departure setting your sights south as you embark on a scenic journey, passing by the vibrant local fishing harbour, adorned with an array of colourful fishing boats. Keep an eye out for the resident Stingray Parrie, a beloved figure in the town since his release from the Two Oceans Aquarium several years ago. Breakfast en-route over looking the turquoise bay. We then head up a fynbos covered ‘koppie’ with an elevation of 210m – adorning expansive views. Visit the second oldest working lighthouse in South Africa, and then tuck into lunch at a delightful trattoria or local fish shop offering catch of the day (for your own account). Our team will then transport you back to your accommodation for a relaxing afternoon and an evening around the fire.
An early morning ‘swim to the sunrise’ is optional, then a hearty cooked breakfast. Check out around 09h30.
Our car will pick you up and transport you to the start of today’s walk which takes you across the Southern Tip of Africa, the surreal meeting point of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. Pass by a historic shipwreck, a testament to the area and the Cape of Storms. Delve deeper into the history of the Strandloper route and see what few in the world will ever get to. Ancient fishtraps made 20 000 years ago, that are still being used today (tide dependant). Today is an incredible meditative walk which takes you into a private nature reserve, where your accommodation is the furthest accommodation South on the African continent. Unwind by the tranquil turquoise lagoon for a sundowner and swim before a delightful dinner.
Take a deep breath and savour the profound sense of place, as you immerse yourself in the wonders of this extraordinary section of the world.
Day 5: (5 km)
After breakfast and check-out, we set out for our final walk – a 5 km stretch along the breathtaking Walker Bay coastline. Here, the whales come right upto the rocky cliffs, and you can hear them breathe. Depending on the tides, our route will either include:
De Kelders Sea Cave: Descend to an ancient sea cave, a site of incredible archaeological significance, where there are remnants of Middle Stone Age man, dating back an astounding 70,000 to 80,000 years, with many of the discovered tools now on display at the esteemed Cape Town Museum. We include a second cave, as magnificent, not known to many.
African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary: This world-class rehabilitation centre rescues and cares for injured, ill, or abandoned seabirds, with a special focus on the endangered African penguin. Guests can see the dedicated team at work, learn about the penguins’ rehabilitation journey, and witness these charming birds up close in a safe, ethical environment.
If time allows, we’ll make a short detour through the historic mission village of Elim, with its charming white-washed cottages and peaceful atmosphere.
Our journey concludes in Hermanus around lunch time — bringing your Walk With Whales adventure to a close with memories of ocean breezes, whale sightings, and the rhythm of the coastline still fresh in your mind.
Upon return to Hermanus, you have the option to travel home that evening, or stay over for a ‘night on the town’. Enjoy activities such as whale watching, wine tasting in the Hemel-en-Aarde valley, or a sea kayak adventure. Let our team book this for you, to continue your worry free adventure.
