‘ To Leanne and her amazing team.
What a beautiful unexpected treat you gave us this week. The growth that happened in our group while we walked, hiked, swam, chatted, laughed, stayed silent, cried and celebrated, was extraordinary. How privileged we were to have access to some of the worlds best kept secrets. Thank you for sharing them with us and for working so passionately to preserve them for future generations. ‘ Lucy
Walking on roads is not our thing …. so it’s taken us three years to put this trail together to ensure that you only hike 1km on gravel and about 100m on tar. The Kogelberg is a Biodiversity hotspot and home to endangered species including the Cape rock-jumper and geometric tortoise. It holds a deep historical connection to the Koi and San people, is a Unesco World Heritage site due to its incredible ecological importance and rich bio diversity and home to the Rooisand Wild Horses.
We are absolutely awe-struck by the beauty and magnificence of this area which we are lucky enough to call home. We refer to it as ‘THE MIGHTY KOGELBERG’ for that it sure is!
There are pristine beaches, fynbos covered mountains, untouched waterways; an abundance of birdlife and huge open skies.
This hike includes mountains with the highest elevation of approximately 600 meters, river strolls, a winding journey through an indigenous forest, and walks along picturesque beaches and coastal paths. There may be an estuary crossing – depending on whether it is open to the sea when you hike. One section of the highest summit has a bit of scrambling and steep declines on either side of the path. If this is not for you, one of our leaders will take you around a contour path.
Experience has taught us that this is a summer hike as it offers many swimming opportunities, and being in the Cape in the prime weather months is almost unbeatable.
In winter, these mountains are generally too windy to be on, too dangerous to climb as they are wet and slippery.
This is a MODERATE HIKE – not an easy walk.
The Kogelberg is an eco-tourism destination and Wild Wellness is a proud partner of the Kogelberg Biosphere. Leanne who is a co-owner of Wild Wellness, has been involved in protecting and looking over the Rooisand Wild Horses for the past 8 years. (see our ‘About’ page to learn more).
PLEASE NOTE: It is our intention to give you the best possible hike. We may change the routes and itinerary to adapt to tides and weather.
The Kogelberg Nature Trail
Day 1: Day of Arrival (3 km)
Our shared transport leaves Hermanus at 15h00 taking you to the first nights accommodation. If needed, secure parking is available for your cars.
Please see in the details section below if you are travelling from out of town, as our team will help with airport transfers and additional accommodation in Hermanus either side of the hike if you would like to spend more time in the area.
The first nights included accommodation is in a B’n B, where our team will meet you and give you a detailed briefing on what to expect over the next five days.
A fun evening walk to dinner at a unique and entirely different beach cafe.
Day 2: A Beach Day (15 or 21 km)
The Kogelberg Nature Trail starts after a hearty breakfast straight from your B’n B, along a coastal path through an unspoilt nature reserve with pristine fynbos and many items of interest.
You then head along a 12 km stretch of untouched beach where you will most likely not see another person. Beautiful, refreshing swims in the cool Atlantic Ocean along the way are highly recommended.
Lunch on the banks of an estuary (you may have a crossing) with incredible bird sightings, and maybe the Rooisand Wild Horses too. If 15km is enough for you, we will transport you to a sea side restaurant for a well deserved cold drink and snack, where the 21km hikers will meet you.
Arrive at your next accommodation in the Kogelberg Biosphere for the next two nights. A hearty meal finishes off the day.
Day 3: A Mountain Day (14 km)
An early start to the day as today’s hike on the Kogelberg Nature Trail takes you up a mountain to an elevation of approximately 600m. This is a steep walk in places with a little scrambling.
If this is not for you, one of our team will take you along a contour path that leads you around the side of the mountain. The views from both routes are vast and incredible.
These mountain routes cannot be done in extreme weather conditions, and a coastal path will be walked instead.
No matter which route you take, you will end up on the banks of a river for a picnic lunch and swim. Back to your same accommodation in the mountain for the night.
Day 4: A Mountain Day (15 km)
Head into the heart of the Kogelberg Nature Reserve. Today’s hike on the Kogelberg Nature Trail will gradually climb to an elevation of approximately 350m through an indigenous forest filled with enormous yellowwood, ironwood and stinkwood trees alongside a babbling mountain stream with many waterfalls. This is the only place in the Reserve with a forest, and it’s incredible. Once out of the forest, you walk past the most spectacular rock formations we have ever seen. At the top, there are scenic views which include tomorrows route. Lunch is at the top of a large waterfall.
You then make your way down zig-zag paths to a renowned Botanical Garden, a wonderful upmarket South African based curio shop and you will then meander to your new accommodation for a rewarding sunset and a delicious dinner, right on the doorstep of the Atlantic Ocean.
Day 5: A Coastal Day (13 km)
A leisurely morning with a full cooked breakfast.
Today walk includes a visit to a penguin colony and a secluded beach walks right around the point in a private nature reserve.
The colours of the ocean around here are breathtakingly beautiful – an assortment of turquoises, greens and blues. We stop for a beach picnic and then head out for fabulous dinner.
Day 6: A Mountain and Celebration Day (5 km)
An early start and up a mountain for our last summit where you are treated to a view extravaganza, where you can look back at your whole hike. Enjoy breakfast at the top!
A short walk down the mountain where the bus awaits and we will then take you back to your cars in Hermanus, or to the airport to travel home.
Should you wish to spend an extra night in Hermanus, our team will help you arrange this, so that you are central, comfortable and welcomed to olde world charm!
